The Sunshine Coast is an amazing place to enjoy winter. A lot of people consider the best time to visit the Sunshine Coast to be the summer season, but you should not forget about the winter too!

If you have the idea of a winter escape without worrying about harsh weather, the Sunshine Coast could be your next stop. It’s well known for its great natural and outdoor lifestyle and so many things to do with what a mild climate can offer. Winter on the Sunshine Coast brings wetter weather and some dark, moody days, but it’s rarely too cold which makes it an idea to get out and explore the city.

If it’s too rainy for a walk on the trail there are fabulous public libraries in Gibsons and Sechelt and cozy cafés, shops and galleries where you can stay warm and comfy while soaking up the Coast’s wintertime vibes. Some snowfall can happen in December or February and bring 3 inches of snow every year with an average of 10 days of snow with some quantity of snow but by no means it is a typical Canadian winter full of snow and ice. So when those snowflakes start falling, take advantage of the winter activities.

You should consider enjoying outdoor activities like skiing, snowshoeing, walking, hiking or visiting markets and fairs in this paradise-like place. We would like to share the best things to do on the Sunshine Coast to know what is going on traditionally there.

Festival of Lights
Checking out some awesome light displays is a fun way to get into the holiday spirit! Usually, this favourite traditional event includes the parade of lights and holiday craft market where kids can make their crafts and take them home.

The Sunshine Coast Christmas Market and Craft Fairs
Christmas markets and craft fairs usually happen in late November and December on the Sunshine Coast. It is the best way to spend your time and enjoy sweets, treats and treasures.

Go Hiking
When on the Sunshine Coast, do as the locals do and get outside! Hiking (year-round) is a popular outdoor activity in and around the city, and is a great option to explore some of the natural beauty while getting exercise!

Dakota Ridge is a winter paradise-like recreation near Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast. It has a 1,532-acre plateau featuring 20 kilometres of world-class groomed and track-set cross-country ski trails (classic and skate) and 7 kilometres of snowshoe with a network of trails through the forest. For more information including how to get there, trail pass information, trail map & more, please visit the Sunshine Coast Regional District’s website.

Go snowshoeing
Snowshoeing has grown in popularity over the last few years. People enjoy it because you get to re-experience your favourite trails in a fresh way in the winter. It also gives you a new challenge on your favourite hike route with the added difficulty of snow. If you love to hike then there is an awesome option for you to enjoy it. Well, that same love for hiking can easily carry over into the winter with snowshoeing!
There are three main snowshoe trails at Dakota Ridge: Balsam Loop, Ridge Walker and Eagle Lookout Loop.

Balsam Loop
Length & Difficulty: 2.7 km | easy
Balsam Loop is a 2.7 km snowshoe trail for beginners with open wide gorgeous vistas. On a clear day, you can even glimpse Mount Baker and Vancouver Island with plenty of ocean views. More details you can find here:
https://www.alltrails.com/trail/canada/british-columbia/balsam-loop

Ridge Walker
Length & Difficulty: 5 km | moderate
Ridge Walker Trail connects with the Balsam Loop. This trail is a great five-kilometre snowshoe trail. It heads uphill through the forest and frozen ponds and marshes. If you would like to get in a few additional hours of snow, with some uphill sections you can get it. This trail branches off from the Balsam Ridge trail at two points, so you can combine it into one. More details you can find here:
https://www.alltrails.com/trail/canada/british-columbia/ridge-walker-loop

Eagle Lookout Loop
Length & Difficulty: 2.1 km | moderate
Eagle Lookout Loop is a 2.1-kilometre trail through the forest that leads to a small lookout at the top of the route. Nevertheless, the views are supposed to be promising on the top, sometimes they can be hidden. To get more details you can here:
https://www.alltrails.com/trail/canada/british-columbia/eagle-lookout-loop

Cross – Country skiing
Cross-country skiing attracts a wide cross-section of people, including hikers looking for a way to get outdoors in the winter. It demands sustained physical exertion, making it the perfect activity for keeping warm and a low-impact way to maintain physical fitness.

There are more than 20 kilometres of cross-country ski trails, set for both classic and skate, spread across 12 trails at Dakota Ridge.
There, along with lots of loop options, you can find a good mix of green, blue, and black trails depending on their complexity. If you are a cross-country skier beginner, you need to follow green-listed Wren, Chickadee and Grouse trails. A kids’ learning area is located along this trail, too.

More experienced skiers can explore the blue Squamish Loop and Yellow Cedar Trails or Blueberry and Hemlock Trails.
Nevertheless, all trails are well-marked, so it would be a good idea to have a copy of the trail map with you.

One of the best things about living on the Sunshine Coast is that the outdoor activity options are endless. One of our favourite ways to enjoy productive time out in nature is forage for berries, mushrooms and other plants that grow in abundance not far from Touchstone.

While foraging in the forest of the Sunshine Coast you can learn about your environment and connect with nature. Different seasons and changes in the weather bring different opportunities for foraging: berries, plants and, of course, mushrooms which the Sunshine Coast being a rainforest has an abundance of. The most important thing to have when you forage for berries or mushrooms is a good guide with the knowledge of what is safe to consume.

Here’s what you need to get started on your foraging adventure.

Weather-appropriate clothing depending on season.

Safety essentials (first aid kit, water, compass, food, extra clothing, sunscreen, bear spray, whistle, flashlight, power bank for your device).

Be wildlife aware. To understand how to stay safe encountering bears you can follow this link. To understand how to stay safe to handle an encounter with wildlife you can follow this link.

Research your trail route and follow its map (check trusted resources). Refer to local government sites for accurate foraging maps keeping in mind it is illegal to forage in city, provincial, and national parks or protected areas.

While foraging alone, be sure to tell your family or a friend which trail you are going to and when you expect to return.

Containers /baskets/bags to carry your finds:-)

To be safe, avoid doing it at dusk or dawn, it is best to forage during the daylight hours

How to learn foraging safety.

Find good resources to identify edible berries/plants/mushrooms.
https://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hfp/publications/00002/chapt4.htm

Visit your local library, grab some guidebooks books like :
https://www.northernbushcraft.com/mushrooms/britishcolumbia.php
https://www.northernbushcraft.com/guide.php?ctgy=edible_berries&region=bc
https://www.northernbushcraft.com/guide.php?ctgy=edible_plants&region=bc

Join local foraging clubs or tours available on the Sunshine Coast.

Use the Internet in conjunction with a guidebook. If you think you’ve identified your foraging finds correctly using a foraging guidebook, search for more additional information and pictures. Here is a great app which is a plant identifier:
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/picturethis-plant-identifier/id12524971295

Talk to a local guide or expert who can help you identify local edible berries/ plants/ mushrooms

Seasonable foraging on the Sunshine Coast:

Spring: Salmonberries, huckleberries, Stinging nettle, Dandelions

Summer: Salal, Blackberry, Saskatoon berries, Wild Chamomile

Fall: Sweet chestnuts, Mushrooms

Fall on the Coast is a lovely time that brings a change in the weather. Summer has gone and now not so many berries or plants you can enjoy. But when one door closes another door opens 🙂 Fall is the time for mushroom foraging.

To learn more about mushrooms on the Sunshine Coast you can visit the Mycology Center:
https://www.meronwood.com/

Or contact Mushroom Education Center:
https://shaggyjack.com/

CAUTION: It is not recommended that you touch, pick, or eat ANY mushroom or fungi you find in the forest unless you are with a trained professional who can make proper identifications with absolute certainty.

To learn about how to hunt for mushrooms on the Sunshine Coast you can follow the link:
https://miss604.com/2018/10/hunting-for-mushrooms-on-the-sunshine-coast.html

What are the Benefits of Foraging?
Foraging for food is not essential today, but the possibility of gathering your own food in the wild is the opportunity to get you outside and back into nature. Moreover, spending time outdoors in green spaces has a positive impact on health.

We would highlight 7 main benefits of foraging

Provides 100% fresh and organic food, no pesticide or wrapped in plastic food.

Reduces the stress level and it is a mindful practice as well.

Make us slow down and tune in to what is around us.

Helps us understand and appreciate our local landscape by gaining knowledge of plants and how they grow.

Uses for medicines and biofuels.

Promotes good health and well-being.

Save your money!

It includes an NHL-sized ice arena, squash and racquetball courts, multi-purpose rooms, a youth centre, drop-in activities, and a weight room. They also have table tennis, pool and foosball in their lobby.

Gibsons & District Public Library

There is no better place than the library to discover new things. The Public Library is located in Lower Gibsons on South Fletcher Road. It is one of the few public spaces that are free and accessible to everyone. It houses plenty of books for any age and interest, and is the workplace for creativity and innovation. It has thousands of books, online books, magazines, newspaper articles and research resources and offers different programs and events for kids, teens and adults. Public computers are also available, so you can book a computer session here. Gibsons & District Public Library also has a great outdoor space with a spectacular view of the ocean. And, who doesn’t love free WIFI?

Bonniebrook Beach

Bonniebrook Beach is considered to be the best beach in Gibsons. It is located in the north of Gibsons. Here you can find both: sections of sand and sections of pebbles. The best sand you can find is near the end of Ocean Beach Esplanade. Bonniebrook Beach stretches over 2 kms, so it’s a great place to go for a long walk. Windsurfing is very popular at this beach. You can enjoy the sun all day, have a picnic, and watch the boats passing by. Bonniebrook Beach, with its breathtaking views and picturesque coastal scenery, is one of the favourite places for tourists and locals.

Shop Local on the Coast

While out and about, check out some local shopping venues, there are some really nice stores in this area. Unique clothing and accessories can be found in some boutiques and stores in Lower Gibsons. Finding a perfect gift to take home is very easy here. Wander along Marine Drive, Molly’s Lane, and Gower Point Road to discover lots of cute shops. Try the olive oil at Sunshine Coast Olive Oil or browse the racks at Starlet Vintage. Don’t miss the Gibsons Public Market a few blocks south. lt is the place where you could buy freshly baked bread and pastries, seafood, cheese and a variety of local food. It also houses different special events in the city, so you can check out Gibsons Market calendar for upcoming festivals or view the full calendar for an event to pair with your trip.

By the way, The Gibsons Market has Gala Fundraiser & Tribute again this September and we are proud to support it.

Craft Beer and Cider

The craft beer and cider scene are thriving in Gibsons. Gibsons hosts three well-known breweries: The 101 Brewhouse +Distillery, Tapworks Brewing Company and Persephone Brewing Company. In Upper Gibsons, The 101 Brewhouse +Distillery has craft beers and a small restaurant where you will find casual food along with fun events. Locals say it is also the Sunshine Coast’s first craft distillery, making small-batch gin and vodka. Just a few minutes away in Lower Gibsons you will find Tapworks Brewing Company. They are famous not just for their craft beer but for their incredible patio as well. Don’t miss a chance to visit Persephone Brewing Company near the ferry terminal to experience their farm-to-keg brewery. They grow and use their own ingredients themselves. If beer isn’t what you would prefer, Sunday Cider can help you out. They make small-batch craft cider from 100% freshly pressed apples at their cider house in the forest just north of town.

Sunshine Coast Trails

Getting outdoors and enjoying the sunshine, fresh air, and green grass is one of our favourite ways to spend time on the Sunshine Coast. We’ve compiled a list of our favourite walking and hiking trails for your enjoyment, all within easy reach from Touchstone.

Gibsons

Soames Hill

You can find Soames Hill just above Gibsons. “The Knob” is a 40-minute hike that ranges in difficulty from moderate to strenuous. Access from the east side brings you to the 434-step staircase. These trails are biker friendly but bumpy. Three Geocaches can be found on-site for added exploration fun!

Langdale Falls

This 45-minute hike is part of Sprockids Mountain Bike Park. This steep trail is recommended for skilled bikers and hikers only. The waterfall is slippery, and caution is warned. Look out for Geocaches for added adventure!

BonnieBrook

A Coastal favourite, Bonnie Brook is an easy walk for everyone. This medium-length walk or bike ride is sure to provide amazing views. Enjoy the beach with friends and family any day, all year round.

Lower Gibsons

From the Marina to the shops, Lower Gibsons is your walk and explore destination. Find yourself at the Gazebo boardwalk and make your way to one of the many restaurants, or explore the Marina and see the spectacular island views across the bay. You’re sure to find fascination in the small wonders of Lower Gibsons.

Roberts Creek

Just 10 minutes from Touchstone, Roberts Creek is a one-of-a-kind community with great, family-friendly hikes.

Cliff Gilker

Follow the colour-coded routes for the 1-2 hour hike. Start by seeing the waterfall and head down the bridges and paths. The 7km worth of routes keeps things dynamic and exciting. This is a well-maintained trail, with no biking access permitted.

Roberts Creek Pier

Meet up for the Annual Mandala Painting! Roberts Creek is a quaint town that is full of personality. Walk to the lookout, or make your way to the beach for an easy walk that’s something different.

Davis Bay Pier

You know you’re in Davis Bay when you’ve hit the curve and see the stretch of the Pacific Ocean. This low tide beach makes for incredible walks and beach exploration. The shops and restaurants add to the experience of Davis Bay. Grab a coffee and walk the boardwalk to the incredible pier. The views will never cease to amaze.

Snickett Park

Follow the trail to the rock outcroppings to feel truly one with the ocean, or swing left and head to the Beach and Park for a lovely stroll. Local Bill Terry, an expert on Himalayan Blue Poppies, has brought this incredible flower to the coast and can be seen blooming all along the waterfront path. Keep an eye out for Salish Totem Poles. These historical figures add to the beauty that is Snickett park.

Kinnikinnick Park

Hidden Grove

With 125 acres of beauty to explore, Hidden Grove is your family-friendly trail with wheelchair accessibility and stroller access. The many networks of trails keep your trek exciting with all levels of difficulty to be found throughout the paths.

This historic trail allows the community to witness the traditions of Bark Stripping that the local shíshálh First Nation communities have been taking part in for thousands of years. Once trees are selected, strips of bark are carefully removed and treated. The strips are then woven into baskets, hats and bowls for ceremonial and day-to-day use. You can see specimens in the Groves that were stripped this way. These markings are important as they identify “culturally modified” trees and areas used by the shíshálh Nation dating back thousands of years.” You can see examples at the Sechelt Indian Band Museum Learn more about Bark Stripping here.

Rated as the jewel of the West Coast, the Sunshine Coast is known for its beauty, vibrant arts community and year round outdoor lifestyle. Residents and tourists seek out its shores and coastal hideaways as a means to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Is it time for you to do the same?

With the current extremely active real estate market on the Sunshine Coast, we are seeing an acceleration in a “Great Migration” from expensive and tax-heavy regions and major cities, into demand in smaller communities away from cities. Home owners from across Canada are more and more interested in a home at the foot of the mountains near the beach or overlooking the ocean, and it’s an exciting shift that Touchstone is poised to support.

Touchstone at Gospel Rock offers a residential mix unlike anywhere else on the Sunshine Coast. The Residences and The Townhomes, selling now, and Single Family Homesites coming soon, are all tied into the Village. With traffic-calmed streets that are laid out for jaw-dropping views and enhanced sun exposure, the Village with its Hotel and Plaza was designed to promote community spirit and create a welcoming experience for all visitors.

Here’s 5 Reasons to make The Residences at Touchstone Your Next Home:

Unbeatable Views: Enjoy expansive views of Howe Sound and the Salish Sea from many of the home’s patios and decks. There’s more though, picture yourself enjoying a sunrise with your morning coffee or taking an evening stroll to Cross Rock lookout as the sun slowly drops into the glistening sea. Stare out over the expanse, as you watch sailboats and cruise ships roll by, and if you listen closely you can enjoy the songs of sea lions below. With three protected parks also located at Touchstone, it’s the year-round access you’ve always wished you could have to astonishing panoramic views.

Gourmet Kitchens: Is there a Chef or avid entertainer in the family? Then you’re going to love the ease of hosting your guests and loved ones in comfort and style. The gourmet kitchens will delight the seasoned and aspiring chefs alike. Even the little ones can position themselves at counter height to whip up their favorite freshly baked cookies. Featuring a dining peninsula/island, durable quartz stone countertops, porcelain tile backsplash, a premium stainless steel appliance package, contemporary-styled cabinetry and open cookbook shelf in some homes, you will savour entertaining family and guests.

Close to Amenities:: The cultural and social centre of the community, Touchstone Plaza welcomes visitors to the Village, providing landscaped grounds for community events, live music and art. Take an art stroll and visit artist studios in residence, sit on the café patio savouring a cappuccino with a friend or drop by the local general store to pick up a few key ingredients for dinner. It’s all here, at Touchstone.

Small Town Lifestyle: Why wait? There’s never been a better time to heed the call of coastal living. At Touchstone, you can start the simple nature-centric life you always dreamed of. What’s more is that you’re located just 5-minutes to the Town of Gibsons, the gateway to the Sunshine Coast. Gibsons is known for its iconic Molly’s Reach, made famous by the Beachcombers TV show, the government dock where you can greet fishermen and purchase the daily catch, micro-breweries and out-of-the-box eateries, along with the many boutiques that line it’s idyllic streets.

Outdoor Adventure: Are you an avid mountain biker, daily golfer, adventure seeker, or beach lover? The Sunshine Coast is riddled with opportunities for an outdoor lifestyle. . It’s the perfect mix for residents from all walks of life. Did we mention the Coast is also accessible all seasons?
For many, we send a card, a small gift or head over for a BBQ in the backyard, but isn’t it time we did something unexpected and awesome? If you’d still like to celebrate Dad, break up the predictability and give him a trip to Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast.

Gibsons is a quaint seaside town that welcomes all visitors to the Sunshine Coast. Located on hillside above Howe Sound, it is a short 45-minutes ferry ride from Vancouver and Whistler.

From craft breweries to farmers markets and bonfires to swimming, biking, kayaking and relaxing, you’ll find everything here the dad in your life needs for a weekend away.

A DAY ON THE TOWN

Once you’re here, leave the car parked and take a stroll around this incredibly walkable town. Everything you need is found just outside your front door, helping to make your stay that much more relaxing. Without having to drive, you have access to Gibsons’ collection of top-rated merchants, from restaurants to small shops of every variety. Head to Beachcomber Coffee, where you can load up on a generous buzz of caffeine. There’s also eateries like Lunitas to grab a taco to go, Buono’s for a slice, Sandy’s Bake Shop and Smitty’s Oyster House to choose from, your taste buds will also be on vacation. Don’t forget our breweries though, from the 101 to Tapworks, Bruinwood Distillery and Brickers Cider.

ON THE WATER

Kayak or Canoe while you explore the waters off Gibsons Harbour, and adventure over to local islands like Keats and Gambier.
